Purpose of the course

This course is intended to introduce students to personal computer (PC) hardware, operating systems and applications.  Applications include: Word-processing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentation software and use of the Internet.

 

Course Objectives

The objectives of the course are:

1.Explain the history of computing and computers

2. Describe the components of an information system and how a computer works.

3. Develop a basic understanding of use and functions of an operating system and its built in tools.

4. Explain the fundamentals and concepts of Word processing, Spreadsheets, Databases and Presentation software so that the students are in a position to use similar packages from other manufacturers.

5.Use practically a survey of the tools that are available within the four basic application programs.  The subject will be treated with sufficient depth so that the student will be aware of what word processing, spreadsheets and databases can do.

6. Able to write term papers and reports using Microsoft office suite applications.

7. Apply their learnt knowledge on the  Internet and  how to perform web searches using major search engines

8. Be able to prepare students adequately to further continue exploring and expanding their knowledge of computers.

History

Computer History, evolution

A brief overview of the history and development of computers. Overview and definitions, Input/output devices, Processors, Memory,  Storage devices.

Introduce the course and set semester expectaions on Assignments, CATS,Presentations.

What is software, type’s computer of software’s e.g. application verses system software’s with their types.

Group work: Each Group allocated application software to identify areas of plication and common vendors.

Binary numbers

What are binary system, bits, bytes, hexadecimal numbers, octal, binary letters, logic gates, truth table

Assignment: Binary conversions

Networks

Definition ,network topology, types of networks and their categories e.g. LAN,WAN,MAN,PAN,GAN etc.

Assignment#2:Topologies (advantages and disadvantages)

Teaching Methodology

Lectures, problem solving, discussions and practicals in computer lab.

 

Assessment

Student assessment will be based on project work, continuous assessment and a final examination.  The project work and continuous assessment will comprise 40% of the final grade and the final examination 60%.
