DISASTER MANAGEMENT:

The course helps the student to be equipped with knowledge and professional skill for disaster management. The course includes: Introduction to disaster management: terms, history of disaster management, role of United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), disaster trends, how disasters affect development.

The four phases of disaster management: disaster mitigation, preparedness; response and recovery. Hazard identification and hazard profiling; vulnerability; identification of possible causes of disasters: natural and anthropogenic- floods, locust invasion, radiation accidents; landslides, fires, famine, electrical faults/ electrocution, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruption, collision of earth with objects from space; hazard zonation maps; mitigation measures in industrial settings; mitigation in the event of natural disaster, disaster mitigation: structural and non-structural approaches; use of early warning systems in detection of possible disasters (observation of meteorological changes; volcanic activity reports) for prevention purposes; handling displaced people or refugees in a sustainable manner (water supply, sanitation, food availability and safety); communication before, during and after disaster;  Disaster response: pre-disaster and post disaster. 

Management of supplies, managing volunteers, Disaster recovery – recovery actions before a disaster; components of recovery. Participants involved in disaster management. Role of Red Cross and other participants. Assessment surveys; Case studies of past disasters and how they affected the environment and health of human beings. Emerging approaches in disaster management; disaster prevention/reduction; national disaster policy. Study of disasters in the Bible: level of preparedness and the effectiveness, e.g., Joseph in Egypt.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of the course, the learners should be able to:

1.      Identify potential causes of disasters in a given community;

2.      Highlight the merits and demerits of current disaster relief methods;

3.      Advise on sustainable development to avoid cycle of disasters;

4.      Plan a strategy for warning the affected community;

5.      Develop a disaster preparedness plan for an affected community for rescue operations and mitigation measures;

6.      Plan a strategy for restoration of affected ecosystem; and

7.      Integrate disaster preparedness of in development agenda.
