The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the brain-behaviour relationships that underlie various cognitive, behavioural and affective processes. To begin to understand these relationships, we must first review the basic elements of neuroanatomy, physiology and cellular body. The course is to create awareness in the student of the relationship between physiological systems of the human body and behaviour.


Upon successfully completing this course, the student should be able to:-

1) Illustrate the basic structure and functions of the central and peripheral nervous systems;

2) Explain the operation of systems that bring information from the environment into the nervous system;

3) Demonstrate the operation of systems that produce behavioural output that affects the environment;

4) Explain how hormones and the behaviour they govern interact with the environment and each other;

5) Show how homeostatic mechanisms and brain reward systems influence behaviour;

6) Demonstrate how the nervous system processes and stores new information;

7) Discuss the nervous system's roles in emotional reactions;

8)  Explain the nervous system's role in certain neurological and psychological disorders;

9) Discuss the complex interplay among physiology, behaviour, and environmental circumstances.
