Purpose of the course

This course is intended to introduce students to personal computer (PC) hardware, operating systems and applications. Applications include: Word-processing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentation software and use of the Internet.

Course Objectives

The objectives of the course are:

1.To understand the history of computing and computers

2.Learn the components of an information system and how a computer works.

3.Develop a basic understanding of use and functions of an operating system and its built in tools.

4.Learn the fundamentals and concepts of Word processing, Spreadsheets, Databases and Presentation software so that the students are in a position to use similar packages from other manufacturers.

5.To give the students a survey of the tools that are available within the four basic application programs.

7.At the end of the course the students should be able to produce term papers and reports on computers and to use computers as a tool in their future professions.

8.To know what the Internet is and how to perform web searches

9.Prepare students to be in a position to continue exploring and expanding their knowledge of computers.
