Course purpose
The course is designed to enable students gain knowledge and skills on microbiology and microbiological methods and techniques that contribute to safe patient centered care.

At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- Explain microbiology and its relevance to the practice of nursing.
- Explain the significance of microorganisms to health.
- Describe characteristics and the life cycle of microorganism of medical importance.
- Describe the characteristics of parasites of human importance.
- Describe viruses and the relationship to health.
- Explain mycology and its importance to health care.
- Integrate knowledge of microbiology with skills to benefit the delivery of health care
- Interpret staining procedures for identification of microorganisms.
- Apply microbiological concepts and principles in prevention and control of infections.
- Demonstrate patient and provider safety in specimen collection and handling.
- Describe the life cycles of parasites of medical importance.
- Recommend interventions to prevent the spread of diseases associated with parasites.
